Bill Scott Garden Fireflies 1993 acrylic on paper 38 ¼" x 31 ½" 1993
Bill Scott Flowers and Weeds oil on canvas 27" x 34" 2009
These two paintings by Bill Scott were painted fifteen years apart, and I like thinking about both the differences and similarities between them. It goes without saying that both paintings exist in a shallow space, with a carefully considered but highly playful composition. Both use color as an essential aspect of each shape.
"Flowers and Weeds" has moved completely away from any indication of real space into a jazzy realm of flat design. The promenading colors and shapes seem as though they would continue right past the boundaries of the painting- if you could look to the right or left.

In honor of Lisa Daria Kennedy's beautiful flower paintings, we'll spend the month of August considering paintings, drawings and photographs of flowers. If you have an image of a painting, drawing or photograph of a flower that you admire (someone else's work) and a few thoughts you'd like to share, please email me and I'll set up a post for you.
