Kurt Solmssen Sunset State 4 oil on canvas 8"x10" 2012
Sky, Land and Water oil on linen 22"x24"
Kurt Solmssen's landscapes are flooded with light and color, the expressive brushwork applied with sweeping ease, no matter the size of the painting. He paints on location, finding that having only about a three hour window to capture fleeting light conditions helps him to fully focus and paint with passion.
Solmssen often works on a large scale, and lists Willis Redfield, Fairfield Porter, and the Bay Area painters as major influences. He attended art school on the East Coast, but now lives and paints on an inlet of Puget Sound.
In honor of Elizabeth Wilson's passionate interest in the subject of changeable skies, for the rest of September we'll be looking at landscape paintings with a strong emphasis on the heavens. If you have an image of a painting, drawing or photograph with a focus on the sky (not your own work please) and a few thoughts you'd like to share, please email me and I'll set up a post for you.
