Edouard Vuillard The Breakfast Near the Window oil on wood 21 x 24 cm 1892
Edouard Vuillard Woman Before a Window
There is such warmth in the interiors of Edouard Vuillard. This is entirely too personal of a comment, but his richly decorated interiors and golden light streaming through the windows make me think of happy moments in my childhood, specifically sunny winter Sunday afternoons, my large family scattered about the house, a roast beef in the oven. And yes, my parents had many oriental rugs and wall hangings.
On my quests to find good images for this site I typically comb the internet, and I often have the problem of finding something wonderful on someone's Tumblr site, or Pinterest site, or blog with no information at all other than the painter's name. It's frustrating, and I hate to contribute to the problem, so if anyone knows the title or any other information about the top image please let me know.
Aren't these paintings marvellous?
I don't make portraits, I paint people in their homes.
Inspired by the paintings of Gabriella Soraci, the month of October will be devoted to looking at paintings that use a window as a central subject. I plan to alternate between contemporary artists and artists from the past. If you have a suggestion (not your own work please), please email me an image along with a few sentences about the work.
