Fairfield Porter

Fairfield Porter (1907-1975) believed that in art feeling and idea should be one and the same. Maybe that is why I find it hard to discuss his paintings- they seem to be getting at some kind of fundamental truth about the world, but a truth that can't be put into words. Simply put, when I look at these two paintings, I think  "Oh yes, the world is just like this, and it really is wonderful."

Subject matter must be normal in the sense that it does not appear sought after so much as simply happening to one.

Inspired by the paintings of Gabriella Soraci, the month of October will be devoted to looking at paintings that use a window as a central subject. I plan to alternate between contemporary artists and artists from the past. If you have a suggestion (not your own work please), please email me an image along with a few sentences about the work.
