It didn't take me long to look through Julian Merrow-Smith's blog and find several great winter landscapes. His paintings are so dependably wonderful, despite (or maybe because of) his stupendous output.

Like most of the other Daily Painters, his work is not original in subject matter or composition. Yet the way he seems to drink in the visual beauty of his local landscape and get it down in paint- clearly, cleanly, without pretension, day after day- makes him one of my favorite living landscape painters.

The nice thing about daily painters who blog their work is that you know the exact (or near exact) day that something was painted. This last painting, "Distant Snow", was posted on March 18, which means Merrow-Smith painted it in the last days of winter. What a pleasing herald to the coming spring!

Which of these paintings is your favorite?

"I'm making a living, but I'm also spreading a little joy. It is satisfying."
-Julian Merrow-Smith

The month of December will be dedicated to the theme of "Winter". Please email your suggestion (not your own work please) with a few words to describe why you like it. Be sure to include the title, medium, size and year.
