Karin Jurick

Here are Karin Jurick's two favorite paintings from 2012:

Fifty Shades of Green oil on masonite 8" x 8" May 2012

Wine:30 oil on masonite 10" x 10" September 2012

Karin explains why she chose these paintings:
I think the composition is so right for both, and I know I saw the finished painting in my head the minute I shot the photo. I thought they were 2 of the best paintings I'd done in a while. Here's the bite- neither have sold, which is a usual thing with me and other artists. What is it that makes us feel we batted a 1000 and it doesn't speak to anyone else? It happens to me all the time. The ones I don't like get the raves.
I asked Neil and Karen (both painters) what they'd pick as their favorites last year and the same 2 came up. Go figure. I'm guessing it's an artist's eye that will sometimes share the love.
Of the countless artists participating in the Daily Painting Movement, Karin Jurick is one of the most well known and loved. I think one of the reasons her work is so popular is because of its everyday quality; her people are the people you see in restaurants, on park benches, and in museums, often enjoying a small break from work and stress. Karin captures daily life unfolding, knowing that these ordinary moments are what it's really all about.

They may be ordinary moments, but Karin is extraordinarily skilled at capturing a person's gesture and mood, never becoming fussy with the paint.

It was hard to chose, but here are my two favorite Karin Jurick paintings from 2012:

Double Dutch oil on panel 8"x 10" September 2012

Fleeting Moment oil on panel 8" x 8" July 2012

You can see more of Karin Jurick's work at her blog and her website.

There are so many good painters who blog that it'll impossible for me to get to them all this month, but here's an idea. If you are an artist who blogs, and would like to be included this month in The Art Room, please email your choice of your ONE favorite painting from 2012, along with a link to your blog. Include the title, size, medium, month and year. All of these submissions will be included in one grand and interesting post towards the end of the month.

  1. I love her work and hadn't her 2 choices before! Shades of Green is very impressive! Green scares me as an artist

  2. I am totally and completely a Karin Jurick fangirl so I absolutely love this post and hearing from her! I have felt the same so many times, that my favorite paintings I've done, the ones that make me wonder how I could have painted something that nice, are sometimes the ones that don't sell! So I'm really glad to hear something like that with someone as amazing as Karin. :)

    1. Crystal, I completely relate to this too!

  3. Yep, all four of these are amazing paintings. About the difference between what we like/ what sells, my feeling is that the ones we truly love are meant to be hung in our own houses and not sold in the first place! They're small, we've got room! Love this series, Taryn, thanks!

  4. I was lucky to have seen the second painting 'wine:30' in the gallery on Hilton Head, and although I know and love Karin's painting and had seen that one on her blog as well, the actual painting is amazing!!! The faces of the women are excuisit, especially the one facing us. I absolutely understand why this painting was one of Karin's top two!

  5. I can't say enough about how much I love Karin's work, and just, her! Have you seen her pizza pan paint demo on youtube? It just makes you happy. :)
