Self Portraits: Giorgio Morandi

Self Portrait oil on canvas 1925

Giorgio Morandi (1890-1964) is well known for the subtle tonal range of his carefully composed still lifes, and the figure was a rare subject for him. This self portrait is painted with the same calm, contemplative approach and gentle precision that he brought to all his work, but the strong value contrasts and earthy colors reminds me particularly of Corot.
