Emily Patrick Fragile 16.4 x 23.8 cm oil and tempera on panel 2008
I was captivated by this self-portrait by Emily Patrick since I saw it at her show in 2010. It is called Fragile and I was immediately drawn to the delicateness of the image. I read on the catalogue that it was painted while she was recovering from an operation and a period of illness.
I really love Patrick's work because as a woman artist she is not afraid of tenderness. The sensitivity of her touch on the surface is a delight, her work is about art, nature, family life, the home.
I am looking forward to her upcoming show in London next month.
David Campbell Frightened of His Own Reflection 10"x10" 2012
On the other side of the spectrum is David Campbell's series " The Idiot". He is acting a part, moving into the realm of the quirky and the grotesque, with a preoccupation for the composition, the partition of the surface and the juxtaposition of colour and tone. These works are surprising, exciting and curious. Thanks Ilaria, for your interesting choices!
Ilaria Rosselli Del Turco is an exceptional painter, so I couldn't help but add her own self-portrait to this post:
