Favorites of 2013: Gabriella Soraci

For the rest of the month of January we're going to revisit each of the artists interviewed here in The Art Room.  I've asked everyone to choose a favorite painting or two from 2013, and to tell us the reason for their choice.

Gabriella Soraci has chosen Pink Satin and Lace as one of her favorite paintings from 2013:

Pink Satin and Lace oil on canvas 40" x 30" 2013

Pink Satin and Lace (detail)
"Pink Satin and Lace" is the last of a series of paintings I made during summer 2013. I continue to enjoy the compositional challenge of balancing areas of detailed patterns and/or textures with larger areas of color where the eye can rest. The composition is the most symmetrical to date, but the theme of wrapping cloth in a circle is one that I carried over from previous bodies of work. I painted all of the series from 2013 using natural light and worked with a much wider range of values than I have thus far explored. Last month I finally documented a number of drawings from the last few years that had been piling up and have updated my website accordingly. My daughter Francesca is now 2 1/2 years old and I'm finding it much easier to make time for painting, as long as I ignore the dishes and the laundry! I'm looking forward to more painting in 2014!
Gabriella also selected a drawing:

Large Rose in Jar charcoal on paper 21.5" x 16" 2013

Gabriella Soraci has some upcoming exhibitions:
The Elliott Fouts Gallery in Sacramento CA is including 4 of my new paintings in a group show entitled "40 and Under." Also, an older painting, "Scarf on Wood Beam on Table" will be included in a group show in March at Western Illinois University entitled, "Painting the Familiar and the Ordinary: Contemporary Still Life".
You can find out more about Gabriella at her website, by visiting her Etsy Shop, and by reading her interview.
